I couldn't believe how bad this film was.<br /><br />And yea, someone else edited it after it was filmed and I can only surmise it was so that the director and others behind the camera would never work again.<br /><br />Warren Oates was always a gripping presence on screen, but as Raymond Chandler? With this dialogue? Naw...<br /><br />Leslie Caron looks fantastic, but you said it: it feels like she's from some other planet. The music is prototypical early 1970s orchestrated jazzy stuff, like a Lalo Schifrin knockoff.<br /><br />The location shots of Carmel and Monterey from 1970 make it worth watching.
